John Bailey hears his seven-year-old rate his favorite things on a 1-to-10 scale — Mother, 10; me, 9.8; stuffed Perry the Platypus, 9.9 — and isn’t hurt, but recalls a survey of Thai boys in which they named their mothers as their favorite things and ranked their fathers, on average, third, just behind a serving of beef.

John Bailey and seven-year-old in half an afternoon have transformed his room in Bloomington, dear Lord, into Lego Joplin. Three months along and we’ll still be picking up the pieces.

John Bailey is, along with a seven-year-old, headed for an afternoon jam-packed with Legos. If you find four or five hours of construction and imaginative play appealing, then come by. You and I, like Lego minifigures, can swap heads for a while.

John Bailey and seven-year-old retrieve the tray of 99 RoseArt crayons and begin holding selections up next to the televised visage of John Boehner in search of a match. Peach? No. Salmon? Copper? Peanut butter cup? No, no, no. It’s something between burnt orange and burnt sienna, and surely not found in nature.
